On the night of Friday, March 9 the varsity boys’ soccer team fought against the Round Rock Dragons in the second round of district play, with hopes of gaining another win and clinching a spot in playoffs after a four year drought, ending the night with a score of 3-0 for the Warriors. While both teams fought hard, it became a tense battle between the two rivals that essentially favored the Warriors.

“We came out really strong and we had a really good game,” Carlos Lobera ‘18 said. “We put a lot of intensity in the first half and started going down at the end, but then we picked it back up at the start of the second half and put multiple chances that we had away.”

Numerous passes were made by Oliver Harris ‘18 to Philip Richardson ‘20 and Avi Kacker ‘19, before Felipe Centeno ‘19 scored the first goal of the night with just 30:39 minutes left in the first half, giving the Warriors a one-point advantage over the Dragons early on in the game. As the first half was coming to an end, the Warriors continued to push through the Dragons’ offense as Richardson and Jack Elliott ‘19 both executed effective defensive strategies to keep the ball away from opposing players, before Caden Popps ‘18 managed to score a goal for the team with just 28:25 left in the first half, bringing the game to a 2-0 score over the Dragons.

Into the second half of the game, the Warriors showed skill and determination as several blocks were made by Kacker, before Nikola Djordjevic ‘21 and Hilton Pineda ‘18 both attempted runs of the ball after successfully stealing it from a Round Rock player. With the second half coming to a close, a successful block of a Dragon player’s kick was made by Justin Lang ‘20 with 23:01 left in the second half, preventing Round Rock from making a goal. As a victory was clear for the Warriors by the end of the night, Elliott made it official as he scored the third and final goal of the night for the Warriors with just 7:00 left in the game, bringing the score to 3-0 over the Dragons. This gave the Warriors another district win and a spot in playoffs.

“I mean it’s honestly a dream come true, I never imagined that my class could amount to so much and help our school make history,” Centeno said.
