The girls’ JV soccer team took on the Vista Ridge Rangers on Friday, Jan. 18 in a tense game which ended in a draw.

At the beginning of the first half, keeper Gabbi Wallace ‘22 was able to stop a shot taken by the Rangers. The ball bounced back and forth between goals on the field, while Jaylene Valenzuela ‘20 and Olivia Williams ‘21 dominated towards the end of the half. Neither team was able to put the ball in the back of the net, and the clock ran out with a still score of 0-0.

“I think we were pretty strong [today]. [Our weakest point was] kicking the balls out in the air because of the wind. [Our strongest point was] that we connected passes really well, and advancing up the field,” Katelyn Woodruff ‘21 said.

To begin the second half, a Vista Ridge player barreled upfield to the Westwood goal, but Sophia Ghelardini ‘21 stopped the ball and kept it away from the cage. A foul against Anita You ‘22 was committed, allowing her to take a free kick. You passed the ball to Claire Carpenter ‘21, but both Carpenter and Emma Goolsbey ‘21 weren’t able to score. With three minutes left in the game, Anya Hegde ‘22 took a powerful shot towards the Vista Ridge goal, but was unable to put the Warriors on the board. Time ran out despite efforts from Jessica Lane ‘21 and Woodruff to score, and the game ended with a tied score of 0-0.

“I think we did well today. It sucks that we came out with a tie, but I think we will beat them next time,” Williams said.
