After a nine month long hiatus, Why Don’t We (WDW), a pop music boy band, came back on social media just after their four year anniversary to promote their new song Fallin’ and the complementary music video. Both productions equally showcased each band member’s high vocal ranges and musical talents. The band, consisting of Jonah Marais, Corbyn Besson, Daniel Seavey, Jack Avery, and Zach Herron left all social media platforms in February to take a break and start off fresh with new music.

“As amazing as social media can be, it can be a toxic place as well and it was nice to delete the apps off of our phones for a bit,” Marais said in an interview with PEOPLE. “It allowed us to just focus on writing this music and rest.”

As a huge WDW fan, I was more than ecstatic when I heard about the release of this song. WDW’s last album, 8 Letters, was full of upbeat, no-skip songs including Hooked and Talk. The songs in the album gave off a “screaming at the top of your lungs” vibe.

Fallin’, WDW’s new song was released on Tuesday, Sept. 29. The band celebrated the release with a livestream over Youtube with fans. They also raised a toast in their recording studio chanting “let’s go”.

“The writing session was crazy because the song basically wrote itself,” Marais said to PEOPLE. “We started entirely from scratch and about 45 minutes later it was finished. We actually recorded about half of the vocals at Daniel’s house due to the pandemic and after hearing the demo for the first time I remember feeling like ‘oh s—, this might be the song we’ve been waiting for.’”

Opening the song with an iconic drum line that was originally sampled by Kanye West, Fallin’ blew my mind away. It wasn’t just your regular WDW song. Unlike WDW’s past music circulating around the pop genre, this song took an unexpected turn with a hip-hop twist. The song included a massive beat drop before the chorus and impressive vocals. It was extremely catchy and once I heard it once, I couldn’t get the melody out of my head. With such an amazing start to a new era, I can’t wait to see where the future leads for WDW.

The music video for Fallin’ was equally as brilliant as the song itself. The video was extremely creative, with each band member “falling” in their own way. Seavey was in a falling escalator, Besson was falling in a car crash, Avery was falling in a gravity-defying room, Herron was falling from a Wi-Fi tower, and Marais was in a room with wet grounds representing rain falling.

With new music coming out, WDW’s fans, also known as limelights, have been curious to see what comes next. Some have wondered if WDW will do a repeat of last year, by putting out a song for every month of the year. Others have wondered if a new album will be released soon.

“I hope our fans feel like they can let loose when they listen to this song and I can’t wait to hear everyone scream the hook at the top of their lungs when we are able to play some shows again,” Besson said to PEOPLE.

After the release of Fallin’, my standards have been set high for what’s next to come. I hope to see more hip-hop in upcoming releases as this genre showcases each member’s individual talents more than before.
