Math posters cover the walls, tables neatly organized into groups, topped off with a little Harry Potter spirit sprinkled at the front of the classroom. Striving to maintain a fun learning environment, Algebra teacher Ms. Ellie Qu looks forward to seeing her students thrive.
Having immigrated from China when she was young, Ms. Qu jumped around in different states before finally settling in Austin, Texas.
“I was born in China and came [to America] when I was twelve,” Ms. Qu said. “I was [in] Chicago for high school, and [then] went to Purdue University. We moved to California for a bit before [coming] to Austin.”
Ms. Qu’s passion for math began in high school after doing a lot of tutoring. She then decided to become a teacher while studying mathematics and teaching at Purdue.
“Math can be a boring subject,” Ms. Qu said. “I like to explain it to students [so they can] understand [it] and be successful in school.”
After teaching at Cedar Park High School for four years, she decided to come to Westwood to teach Algebra I and II.
“I love the [students],” Ms. Qu said. “ I love being around kids [because] I have two [of my own]. They’re both in [an] elementary school [that feeds] into Westwood, so it would make sense for me to be here.”
Besides exploring the depths and complexities of math problems, Ms. Qu enjoys relaxing and spending time with her family.
“I love yoga,” Ms. Qu said. “I’ve been trying to do it for two years. I’m not very good at it, but I try to make time for it. I like to go hiking with my family [as well].”
Starting the school year with warmth and enthusiasm, Ms. Qu hopes to get to know the students and the school better.
“I heard Westwood is a big multicultural community so I think I will blend in,” Ms. Qu said. “I think I will really enjoy the learning environment [here because] I love [being here] so far, [and] I really want to be a good teacher at Westwood and try my best for students. I think making it through the school year will be a big accomplishment for me.”
