With a spirited dedication for aiding students to feel comfort and bringing them back to their physically strong selves, Nurse Ms. Pam Wallace devotes herself to being of service to the student body.
With a diverse variety of distinct experiences in many workplaces, Nurse Wallace found her professional match in being a nurse for schools. A proud alumni of University of Rochester, Nurse Wallace began her career as a nurse at a hospital in Boston. After committing to the hospital for many years, she and her husband had to move to Austin, Texas for his job. Taking this opportunity to seek something new, Nurse Wallace eventually tried out nursing at an elementary school, kickstarting the career path she would come to love and pursue.
“I started as a substitute for a school nurse for Round Rock ISD,” Nurse Wallace said. “I loved it so much that I got an [official] job with [them], and this is now my 22nd year as a school nurse in [the] Round Rock [district].”
By transitioning to and from different schools for 22 years, Nurse Wallace has had many unique encounters at various campuses. After working as an elementary nurse at Cactus Ranch Elementary School for 14 years, she decided it was time for a change. She then transitioned from the elementary school level to the middle school level, by working for six years at Pearson Ranch Middle School. After experiencing the middle school nursing dynamic, Nurse Wallace decided she was ready for a new transition, this time at the high school level. After working for one year at McNeil for her first high school nursing experience, Westwood’s nurse position opened, pushing her to switch campuses.
“It was a big transition from elementary to middle,” Nurse Wallace said. “I don’t think it was much of a transition from middle to high school [though], just because by eighth grade, kids are becoming more independent.”
With prior hopes of becoming a marine biologist growing up, Nurse Wallace later realized that she craved a profession more interesting and exciting. When it came to the specifics of the nursing profession itself, Nurse Wallace was able to use her diverse range of experiences to pinpoint what she enjoyed doing the best. Nursing at schools helped Nurse Wallace discover that she was much better-suited to working in a school environment compared to the nursing dynamic at hospitals.
“Hospital nursing is really stressful these days,” Nurse Wallace said. “In order to stay in the hospital you need to be really sick, and to be honest, once you work a school schedule with all of the time off, it’s really hard to come back.”
Her second year nursing at a high school, Nurse Wallace wants to put in a couple of years to try something new. After having such a broad amount of knowledge after all her years of nursing, she plans to decide towards the end of her career whichever type of school she really would like to stick with.
“Every age group you learn,” Nurse Wallace said. “And I love to learn, so I like the challenge of learning new things.”
