From Friday, Sept. 6 to Saturday, Sept. 7, the Women’s water polo team dominated the Ridgewood Rumble, a tournament held at the RRISD Aquatics Center. The team emerged undefeated with a 4-0 record in the tournament, making the girls 9-7-1 on the season.
“Our first day we won by over ten points both games, which feels great,” Katherine Mayer ‘25 said
The team started the tournament with two landslide wins against the Cedar Lake Hawks and the Austin High Maroons, defeating them 19-6 and 17-6 respectively in a great show of skill and time.
On Saturday, the Warriors continued their winning streak with a 9-4 win against the Midway Panthers and ended the tournament strong with their first-ever victory over Westlake in program history with a narrow 7-6 win. The game was won by an impressive long-range goal from Mayer, who scored with ten seconds left on the clock putting Westlake out of reach of the victory.
“I’ve been practicing [long shots] more because my team says I have a cannon. I knew [my] coach wouldn’t like it, but people were telling me to shoot it, and I saw the time and decided to go for it,” Mayer said.
Breaking the 6-6 tie near the end of the final match with a penalty throw, Sara Horsey ‘27 solidified the team’s top spot in the tournament.
“Shooting from the five-meter line is scary,” Horsey said. “This time, I told myself [that] whatever happens happens, and I made it.”
The girls will continue to pursue victory at their game against Cedar Ridge on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
