Written in the late 19th century, The Murder by Anton Chekhov follows Matvey Terehov, a devout Eastern Orthodox Christian, and explores the harmful effects of his religious fanaticism. In the story, Chekhov calls out the characters' tendencies to exploit religious rites only when beneficial to them, an issue still prevalent in today's society.
