The eighty-second, somewhat controversial, Golden Globes were filled with lots of notable events, including the first female solo host, plus new styles from designers everywhere on the carpet. At this year’s awards ceremony, comedian Nikki Glaser opened the night with jokes about everyone’s favorite actors and actresses, and common Hollywood culture. The night was also filled with lots of emotions: Zendaya is allegedly engaged, Wicked won the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award, and Demi Moore and Zoe Saldana both won their first Golden Globes.
The event kicked off from the red carpet, where celebrities in their own unique looks stole the show. The trend of bold colors and lots of sparkle was very prominent as stars like Ariana Grande, Emma Stone and Zendaya stole the show with their breathtaking looks. Ariana Grande appeared next to co-star Cynthia Erivo, wearing a vintage golden flowy gown and white gloves. While Ervio channeled her alter ego Elphaba, sporting an edgier look in her tight black dress. The talented Anya Taylor-Joy rocked a champagne pink dress with lots of shimmer, catching the eye of lots of fans. She added an absolutely perfect floral necklace that took the look to a new level. Zendaya caught everyone’s attention not only with the gorgeous rock on her finger, but with her red carpet debut sporting a bolder look. Zendaya caught everyone by surprise with her stunning burnt orange dress and equally stunning hair transformation.
Comedian Nikki Glaser made history as the first ever woman to host the Golden Globes solo. She started the night by roasting actors and actresses, paying homage to her time on the show Roast. She roasted Selena Gomez, Benny Blanco, and even her own partner in her opening monologue. Some other notable moments include playful jabs at Timothee Chalamet and Glen Powell, plus the persistent trend of ozempic usage amongst lots of Hollywood stars.Glaser made the crowd laugh, and had the audience consistently anticipating who she would poke fun at next. This year was an improvement compared to Jo Koy’s off-color monologue from last year. Glaser really connected with the audience with her jokes and iconic comedic style.
As the night continued, many famous and familiar faces such as Seth Rogan and Catherine O’Hara appeared to present the various award categories. The Rogan and O’Hara came on together, and touched on their many memories of costaring together, and their shared experience of being Canadian. Their bit got raunchy at times, and Rogan was bleeped, adding to the hilarious mood already present. Vin Diesel made an appearance to announce the cinematic and box office award, and reminded the world of the unsettled feud between Dwayne Johnson and himself. Many other celebrities like Elton John and Zoe Kravitz presented as well. Actress and presenter Demi Moore won her first ever Golden Globe on Sunday evening. Moore used her acceptance speech to remind everyone to not to give up on their dreams, and reminisce on the time the universe told her “you’re not done.”
The most winning films of the night were The Brutalist and Emilia Perez, which won three and four awards respectively. The Brutalist racked in awards for being the Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Director for Brady Corbet, and Best Actor win for star actor Adrien Brody. Emilia Perez, a new musical/thriller won big at this year’s awards with Best Film Comedy or Musical, Best Original Song, and a win that awarded Zoe Saldana Best Supporting Actress.
Lots of celebrities, like Chris Rock and Tina Fey, turn down the opportunity to host the Golden Globes as the event is often tied with favoritism, racism, and unprofessionalism, especially in recent years. This year, it seems the awards show played it safe. As time goes on, hopefully future years of award shows will be more outside of the box for their ceremonies.
