Dum Dums are an absolute staple of candy, sporting a menagerie of flavors each with their own unique profile. As vastly different as each flavor is, however, there are clear stand-outs when looking at them in their all. Here are the 16 Dum Dum flavors ranked – from worst to best.
- Root Beer. Root Beer comes in a deep brown shade, and at first glance, looks half appealing – but be warned! Its spicy, aromatic scent reflects nothing of the actual taste, which is nothing like a real root beer float. Truly, it’s most reminiscent of licorice: quite a misleading lollipop.
- Cream Soda. Cream Soda is a relatively boring flavor, with a simple color scheme. There’s nothing special to its lackluster taste, and comparatively, it tastes akin to the medicine Ayman took for her pneumonia, making it an overall oddly flavored lollipop.
- Lemon Lime. Although objectively good, with a refreshing flavor, Lemon Lime lacks substance; there’s definitely better out there. It does not have enough lemon or lime to give its flavor any nuance, which makes it fall short in the grand scheme of flavors.
- Sour Apple. It sports a boring shade of green, but it does its job well, tasting and looking just as the name denotes. Other than that, it is a simply boring flavor, and similar to Lemon Lime, possesses little significance.
- Orange. Tasting similar to a creamsicle, orange tends to come off as more artificial than the other Dum Dum flavors. This isn’t a horrible thing, but it surely bumps it down the rankings.
- Cherry. Cherry tastes like pepto bismol medicine, but not to a terrible extent. In fact, it wouldn’t be such a low ranking flavor, if only it didn’t have such a misleading name in relation to its actual taste.
- Strawberry. Strawberry tastes slightly artificial, as most strawberry flavors do. It is nothing majorly special, and so it doesn’t get a special ranking. Its color does move it up the rankings a little, though, as its shimmering strawberry look provides a good flavor base.
- Pineapple. An intense, magnificent summer flavor, pineapple tastes just like a sweet treat after a long swim, making it a staple of the summer aesthetic. However, this (quite obviously) doesn’t work year-round, which bumps this beloved flavor further down the rankings.
- Butterscotch. Just as it says. Our very middle ranking, it possesses a caramel-esque flavor, with a sweet, butter-infused first lick. Slightly salty, but rich enough to warrant a good ranking. Its color looks just as you’d expect, a light coffee shade. Not boring enough to fall below midway, but not surprising enough to rise above.
- Blue Raspberry. A bit of an overbearing flavor, Blue Raspberry makes a punch in the flavor rankings. Its color is just as deep and rich as its flavor profile, a magnificent royal blue. It definitely stands out, and well at that. However, its manufactured flavor just tries too hard to be considered anything but mid.
- Fruit Punch. Tangy and sweet, it tastes just like the fruit punch Kool-Aid mix. This is definitely not a bad thing, however; it has a good balance in terms of flavor and is not misleading in the slightest. This lollipop has the brightest red coloring of all the red flavors, standing out considerably in both color and in taste.
- Watermelon. Although it does not have a great first lick, if you stick it out, the lollipop has a lot to offer in terms of profile: a refreshingly watermelon relish. Its color, likewise, is exceedingly similar to a watermelon’s shade, an appetizing red hue. Marking the start of our top 5 rankings, Watermelon is a definite must-have.
- Cotton Candy. This lollipop has the perfect cotton candy flavor, but the coloring does provide a considerable issue – it would be so much cooler as a pink! The blue hue is a bit boring, and makes it seem as though it should be a completely different flavor. Even with this color problem, Cotton Candy makes its stand in terms of flavor, corroborating the fact that it has undeniably won its fourth place spot.
- Peach. No notes; a true 10/10. Its color looks like a genuine peach, and it tastes just the same. This lollipop does its job perfectly, without trying much too hard.
- Dragonfruit. A beautifully balanced flavor, mildly sweet yet perfectly tart. Its color is the perfect lip shade hue, a stunning maroon ombre. Truly a standout flavor, this lollipop has earned its hard won second place spot in our rankings.
- Bubble Gum. THE lollipop flavor. The original. What you think of when you think “lollipop”. A magnificent cumulation of what the very brand of Dum Dum stands for: an eye-catching, glittering pink color, and underneath it, a nostalgic, fruity flavor for the ages.

root beer at last? is this ragebait?? why are we coping over it tasting like licorice.. traditional root beer is flavored with sassafras and often sarsaparilla, which has a very similar flavor profile to anise, so of course they would taste similar. licorice doesn’t even taste bad anyways.
somehow every single time this gets brought up people act like this is some shocking plot twist nobody could’ve predicted.. like suddenly everyone becomes a professional flavor analyst discovering the deepest mysteries of the universe because wow root beer tastes like the thing it was designed to taste like?? incredible revelation. groundbreaking stuff. truly humanity’s greatest intellectual achievement.
and honestly i don’t get why everyone has to react like they’ve been personally betrayed by a soda?? like one sip and suddenly they’re writing a tragic memoir about how root beer ruined their childhood.. people talk about it with the same energy as someone describing a life-altering event and it’s just a mildly herbal sweet drink.. that’s it.. no secret agenda.. no emotional damage.. just a drink that tastes like… the ingredients it uses.. this shouldn’t be controversial but somehow it is every single time..
and i swear it’s always the same script too.. someone will say “root beer tastes like licorice” and they’ll deliver it like it’s the most devastating insult imaginable.. like they’ve uncovered a forbidden truth that society isn’t ready for.. meanwhile everyone else is sitting there like yes???? correct???? this isn’t classified information?? why are you saying it like you’re blowing the whistle on government corruption.. it’s just soda dude calm down..
and then the wild part is that people act like this is some kind of universal trauma. like okay cool sorry your palate is emotionally sensitive i guess?? but it doesn’t mean the rest of the world has to form a support group to cope with the existence of root beer.. some people like it.. some don’t. you don’t have to pitch a fit about it. you can literally just not drink it. revolutionary concept i know..
and the comparisons people make are always so dramatic too.. “it tastes like medicine.. it tastes like toothpaste.. it tastes like herbal poison brewed by forest witches…” like chill?? you’re not in a fantasy novel.. you don’t have to act like root beer is casting a curse on you.. half the people complaining have probably never tasted half the things they’re comparing it to anyway.. they just saw someone once say it tastes like “medicine” and now that’s their personality.. like please be original at least once in your life, i beg of you
and the funniest thing is that people keep repeating these takes like it’s their first day on earth discovering flavors.. like did you expect root beer to taste like sprite?? did you think it was going to be bubblegum soda or tropical mango blast or whatever?? the drink is literally called root beer.. roots. herbs. plants. hello??? basic context clues.. we can’t be acting confused here..
the best part is when someone tries to invalidate people who actually like root beer.. because apparently enjoying a normal beverage is now a moral failing.. “how can you drink that?? it tastes like licorice???” okay and?? people like licorice.. people like flavors that aren’t just sugar with sugar and a side of sugar.. sorry that some of us have taste buds that can handle something other than artificial fruit flavor number 27.. my apologies for being evolved i guess???
and i really don’t understand the weird cultural fixation on hating licorice in general.. there are like entire continents of people who eat it and enjoy it and don’t have existential crises about it.. but online it becomes this huge drama every time.. like oh no.. the forbidden flavor.. the cursed candy of darkness.. as if eating licorice automatically makes you 80 years old or something.. it’s just a flavor bro.. it’s okay.. your life won’t fall apart if someone else likes something you don’t..
the root beer “medicine” argument is hilarious too.. like yes back in the 1800s some medicinal syrups used herbs that smelled similar to root beer.. congratulations on remembering a random fun fact you heard once.. but modern medicine doesn’t taste like that at all so people are literally comparing root beer to a medicine they’ve never even tasted.. they’re referencing a flavor that doesn’t exist in their real lives.. it’s like complaining that candles smell like medieval torches.. it’s just not a thing..
and let’s talk about how dramatic people get.. they take one sip and suddenly they’re reenacting a greek tragedy.. “oh my god how do people drink this i’m gonna die it’s so disgusting” like okay calm down euripides we get it you don’t like the soda.. but acting like it’s poison is a bit much.. nobody is forcing you to drink it.. nobody is holding you hostage in a root beer factory.. you can simply choose another beverage instead of performing a monologue..
but the thing that gets me the most is how repetitive all of this is.. every time root beer is mentioned anywhere people rush in to give the exact same responses.. the same jokes.. the same exaggerated disgust.. the same forced comparisons.. and it feels like people aren’t even tasting it anymore they’re just recycling the meme.. like the reaction has become more important than the actual flavor.. because if you ask half of these people when the last time they even drank root beer was they’ll probably shrug and say “idk i had it once when i was like 9 and i hated it” like okay cool glad we’re basing our entire personality on a childhood memory from 12 years ago..
it’s just weird how spooky and dramatic people want to make it.. “root beer tastes cursed.. it tastes like a potion.. it tastes like the forest.. it tastes like a spell going wrong..” like bro it tastes like soda.. sweet fizzy soda.. calm down.. you’re not in an rpg drinking alchemist juice.. you’re at a barbecue drinking mug or barq’s or whatever.. you’re not that deep..
and another thing.. the whole “root beer lovers are crazy” angle.. like how is liking a normal common soda suddenly an extreme personality trait?? imagine if someone said “i like orange soda” and people were like “WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU ARE YOU UNHINGED” like please stop acting like root beer is this unimaginable alien beverage nobody should enjoy.. millions of people like it.. there are entire restaurants built around serving root beer floats.. this is not a niche cult. it’s just a drink bro relax.
honestly the whole discourse is just exhausting.. because it never changes.. it’s always just people recycling the same complaints.. the same jokes.. the same “shock”.. the same overreactions.. and then they get mad when people push back like “actually it tastes good to me” and suddenly it’s a war.. like please.. it is not that serious.. nobody needs to fight about soda flavors.. we could all just peacefully coexist and drink what we like.. but no.. apparently root beer is the hill people want to die on..
and even funnier is when people pretend their dislike is somehow objective truth.. like “root beer is bad actually” as if they were delivering a peer-reviewed scientific conclusion.. no dude that’s just your mouth.. your mouth doing its mouth thing.. someone else’s mouth is doing something different.. that’s how taste works.. shocking i know..
but honestly the thing that sticks out the most is the performative outrage.. because if you watch closely you can tell when someone genuinely has a preference and when someone is just repeating what they think they’re supposed to say.. and with root beer it’s almost always the latter.. people treat hating root beer like a social club.. like a membership badge.. like if you don’t loudly proclaim your hatred you’re somehow out of the loop.. it’s bizarre.. just drink something else and move on.. this isn’t a personality test..
meanwhile people who actually like root beer are just chilling minding their business drinking their soda and suddenly someone jumps out like “ewwwww that tastes like licorice how can you drink that are you okay” like please let me enjoy my beverage in peace.. i’m not asking you to sip it.. i’m not holding it up to your face.. i’m not evangelizing.. i’m literally just drinking a soda while you’re acting like i’ve committed a crime against humanity..
and honestly.. imagine if we applied this same energy to other foods.. like imagine someone eating pineapple and someone else going “ew pineapple tastes like pineapple.. why does it taste like pineapple?? i’m gonna throw up” like okay then don’t eat it.. this is not difficult.. nobody is forcing you..
so yeah.. the whole spectacle gets tiring.. the dramatic reactions.. the faux disgust.. the recycled memes.. the idea that liking root beer is controversial somehow.. it’s all so overblown.. it’s just a drink that tastes how it’s supposed to taste.. some people like it.. some people don’t.. and that’s literally all there is to it.. no need for the theatrics.. no need for the shock value.. no need for the exaggerated horror.. just let root beer exist without acting like it started a war..
and yes.. licorice still doesn’t even taste bad anyways..
