TEDxYouth@Austin Registration Opens

transparentposterThroughout the world, TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conferences are held as a platform for people to spread their ideas. On Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016 at Westlake High School from 1- 6 p.m., speakers from around the country and state will fly in for the TEDxYouth@Austin event. The 2015 theme for the event is FullCircle. The event is free for youth and $25 for adults. Participants are required to register beforehand here. The registration form only takes a few minutes to fill out, and the registration period only lasts a limited time. Register now to be eligible for a spot in the audience at the 2016 TEDxYouth@Austin event.

Paws For a Cause
Sunlight streaming through the branches, red ribbons decorate the trees and poles outside of Spicewood Elementary School. Community members were asked to tie "Red Ribbons for Ryder" to celebrate the life of Ryder Harrington '24, who lost his life to the Sixth Street shooting. "If you drive past Spicewood, every tree, every pole, everything that you can tie something around is covered in red ribbons," Saloni Chitari '28 said. "It just made me see how truly connected we were as a community to celebrate the life of someone who died too early."

Smiling brightly, Judge Dimple Malhotra begins her presentation. During Flex, Ms. Malhotra shared her input on her career, journey and advocacy to students. “I hope [students] got a little bit more information about following their passion," Ms. Malhotra said. "[Alongside] if they're interested in law and want to help people, how they can do that, and the different ways to do so."

Austin has gradually shifted to heavy consumerism, setting the social standard for the teen scene.
The Price Tag of Fitting In
The Texas Senate recently passed House Bill 8, a bill that aims to replace the annual State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) test with triannual assessments. This bill also includes the earlier test results, the removal of benchmarks, and adaptive testing. Doubts remain on whether this new bill presents an important reform, or simply repackages the same principles of STAAR.

As one of the most complicated stunts they perform, the Cheerleading team stacks on top of one another forming a pyramid with a Westwood ‘W’. “The pyramid was challenging because we had to put a lot of faith in each other to be able to throw Audri Moreno ‘27 high enough so she wouldn't hit Mia Zell ‘28 while flying over,” Cheerleader Jenna Hallidy ‘25 said. Although this new advanced routine heavily challenged the cheerleaders, they persevered to make the Pep Rally a success.

Hi, I’m Emily, and I’m the Executive Editor of the Westwood Student Press. I love reading and designing, and I hate avocados. I always have music playing in the background, whether I’m doing homework or taking a nap. I drink a lot of water, and consequently I invest of a lot of energy into decorating my Nalgene bottle with pretty stickers. I weed out my fake friends by making my birthday incorrect on Facebook so only the fake friends wish me a happy birthday on my fake birthday. My favorite book is The Secret History by Donna Tartt; it’s a book about friends killing friends for the sake of the Aesthetic™. So it goes.
