On Thursday April 14 and Sunday April 17, the Westwood boys water polo team played three games against Anderson High School, Waco Midway High School, Cedar Ridge for regionals. After winning their first game by five points, and losing their second game by five, the boys finished off the tournament with a shootout to resolve the tied score in their third game.

The first game on Thursday night was played against Anderson High School, with the Westwood boys winning with a final score of 7-2. The boys played a tough game, but they were determined to win.

“We played Anderson the first game, and they were a pretty easy team to beat,” Charles Larrouilh ‘17 said. “I feel like we were faster than them which allowed us to beat them down.”

In the second game, the boys woke up early to play an 8 a.m. game the evening after prom. They lost the game by fifth points which would have put them in a game to play for fifth place.

“Our second game was against Waco Midway,” Ryan Cain ‘17 said. “It was tough playing an 8 a.m. game the morning after prom. Most of us were exhausted. It also didn’t help that their team practices year-round.”

The final game against Cedar Ridge ended in a tie, 5-5. In the event of a tie, a shootout occurs. Five players from each team are chosen to go one on one with the goalie. Each person gets one shot and whichever team makes the most shots wins the game. Westwood made two goals, Cedar Ridge made three.

“We lost due to some errors,” Rory Gatson ‘18 said. “We gave up two points in the last minute and we lost in the penalty shoot out. I feel like we could have done better than we did.”

The Westwood boys took sixth place at regionals, marking the end of the season for them.
