RRISD Students Participate in Fit Games

image1-1Students from schools all over Round Rock ISD (RRISD) gathered at the Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex on April 27 to participate in the district’s spring Fit Games.

The Fit Games were comprised of school specific teams that competed in a short functional fitness workout against teams from all over RRISD. The groups were made up of four people who would work hard with their team for the entirety of the exercise. The team would share the load of the workout and work as a team towards finishing the activity. This year, over 100 teams from all over the district participated.

“It was nice that we got to compete against other schools and see the different schools cheer each other on,” Dylan Baumgartner ‘19 said.

The functional fitness workout that the groups competed in consisted of pushing a sled individually 25 yards, doing a set of either sandbag deadlifts or squat thrusters medicine balls. After a minute break, the team would get a minute and 30 seconds to lunge across the field with weights over their head to a tire, where they would do step-ups until the time ran out. Students also got to showcase their individual strength by competing in a deadlift competition.

“The workout was pretty complex but easy at the same time at the same time because of the amount of preparation put into this event,” Savannah Brooks ’19 said. “It was a little tiring but my team was very helpful.”image1

Despite the competition between schools, the Fit Games kept a friendly atmosphere between the students in competing teams. Students spent their time both before and after their workout cheering on students from not only their own school, but others as well.

“The great thing is you have all RRISD schools competing, but at the same time sportsmanship is a priority,” Coach Doug Davalos said. “There are Round Rock teams cheering on Westwood teams and Westwood teams cheering on McNeil teams. It’s nice to see the camaraderie between schools. The teams and students were able to compete while getting along well and encouraging others.”
