On Friday, May 5, graduating seniors signed a large banner their name around the logo of their future college. The signing was open from 8:30 A.M that morning and went on until 2:40 P.M. Like the one currently in front of the library, the banner will be hanged with a covering for all of next year.

Many seniors have chosen their majors through their passions found in class.

“I’m really interested in the medical field; I’m in the Health Science Academy here at Westwood and as well, I am the governing team ambassador for the academy ambassadors for Health Science,” Raina Saksena ‘16 said. “When I was in ninth grade, I started taking these courses and I was so passionate about it and I loved it so much and I just thought maybe I’ll do neuroscience or biochemistry or something in that field so that’s how I found my passion and UTD was such a good fit for me because I really want to do research as well.”

Some seniors found their major through their own studying.

“So for my freshman year, over the summer, I decided to do a bit of prior studying for AP computer science, a class I was taking the next year. As I started, I found that computer science made sense to me and I enjoyed coding projects,” Will Li ‘16 said. “During the school year and following years, I did computer science projects on my own along with Web design to further my understanding of computers.”

Although graduation is coming up soon, not everyone has pinpointed a specific major just yet.

“I’m interested in production for tv shows or something in psychology. I’m not sure yet,” Jaqueline Lyrly ‘16 said. “I’ve always been interested in psychology and production sort of started last year when I saw a show that was really cool to me and it inspired me to do that.”

This year, several seniors will be attending UT and will take advantage of the many programs they offer.

“I’m going to do the UTeach program so it’s an educational focus,” Garrett Mott ‘16 said. “My dad used to be a physics teacher at a community college and then I took physics here and I really enjoyed it.”

The college banner signing began four years ago. Mr. Steve Clark, the lead counselor, has overseen this year’s signing.

“I think they just like seeing where other students are going and declare where they are going as well,” Mr. Clark said.
