Boys’ Golf Participates in First Vandegrift Invitational

Braving against the intense winds and chilly weather, five boys represented the golf team at the Vandegrift Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 18. The players saw success as they competed against schools including Westlake and Lake Travis.

“The conditions were a little tough, and we only got to play 27 holes because the play was really slow,” Ryan Lee ’25 said. “Everyone still did really well.”

The competing players obtained the following scores:

Luke Hagan ’23: 74-36

Jonathan Kim ’24: 80-42

Austin Skierski ’25: 79-43

Ryan Lee ’25: 83-38

Jake Bialek ’23: 86-44

The team will next take on another Vandegrift Invitational on Friday, Nov. 4.

Edward Jung '26 practices his swing for his next par. As a senior, Jung makes sure to do a couple practice swings before hitting the ball. "I was able to send that ball pretty far, it went straight into the fairway." Jung said.

JV Golf Dominates in Winter Tournament

In the middle of the hilly course, Lauren Phelan '25 sets her ball on the green. Great Hills Country Club is Phelan's home course, which gave her an advantage during the tournament. "It has a lot of different and curvy holes, as well as a lot of water features and hills," Phelan said. "It’s quite a beautiful course to play."

On the back nine, Riley Muljadi '28 and Jordyn Choe '27 celebrate with their clubs in the air. Completing the tournament with their friends gave the golfers a chance to have fun in between hitting.

Collaborating, the Westwood Girls 1st team assesses their results from their current hole. Each Westwood team consisted of three or four players, who provided each other with support and encouragement throughout the tournament. "Playing with my teammates [was the highlight]," Nancy Lu '27 said.

From T&C to Varsity

Throughout the year, Game Day Leaders constantly remind their teammates to put out their best self so they can be role models to other teammates who need it. As their skills were fostered, the cheerleaders stayed true to their individual goals and ambitions even then stress was at its highest during UIL season. "I'm really proud of everyone's individual desire to grow their skills which also translates to the team's growth and overall improvement," Lauren Patterson '26 said.
