  • Zack Suter ’26 is calculating the distance the ball is from the hole. As a senior, Suter has more experience than his peers in hitting the balls in the right angles to the hole.

  • Athena Pallanez ’29 practices her swing at the driving range before the tournament starts. The players are required to arrive early to warm-up, so they tend to practice their drives.

  • Cara Chow ’28 readies up her swing for her first practice drive. At her 3rd tournament since starting golf, shes learned what techniques to practice before she begins.

The Warriors JV golf teams competed on Monday, Dec. 1, at their home course, Balcones Country Club, for a winter-season scramble where they were able to work together in the tournament across 18 holes.

On the girls teams, they ended with a total score of 81. As the holes progressed, the groups relied on solid mid-irons to set up their putts, allowing them to gain as many points as possible. Familiarity with the Balcones’ fairways and greens helped the players make smart decisions, avoiding difficulty and keeping momentum steady across the holes.

“My drive shots started off pretty well, and they kept getting better throughout the tournament,” Athina Pallanez ’28 said. “I feel like I really grew in terms of distance, height, and just the way I played overall.

On the boys’ side, three scramble teams represented Westwood. The boys successfully gained 65 points and ended in 1st place. Throughout the round, the groups relied on strategic drive selection and coordinated short-game decisions to stay in scoring range on most holes.

“I played the safe drive so my teammates could go for the longer shots,” Noah Hwang ’29 said. “I was basically the backup driver, so we used my drive a decent amount.”

Throughout the event, players adjusted quickly to the pace of the greens and aimed to keep each hole within scoring range rather than forcing aggressive plays. The teamwork exhibited by the players allowed each group to highlight individual strengths with consistent tee shots, confident approaches, and reliability under pressure.

Across both JV teams, the scramble format allowed players to lean on each other, by using both long drives and safe layups to build steady team scores. The event also provided valuable in-round experience as players continued refining communication and decision making with their groups.
