Varsity Boys Soccer Leaves Manor Mustangs Out to Dry

As teammate Ricardo Urrutia ’25 dribbles and pulls the ball back from opposing defenders, midfielder Nikhil Modak ’24 jogs around back for support. Much of the game was spent in the Warriors’ attacking third, as the home team continually applied pressure to the Manor defenders and goalkeeper.
With a steady haze of light rain in the background, trainers help midfielder Carlo Fernandez ’23 off the field. His injury in the last few minutes of the game led to a couple minutes of stopped play and a free kick for the Warriors.
After a night spent running, shooting, and diving in the fog and rain, the varsity men’s soccer team confidently defeated the Manor Mustangs on Tuesday, Feb. 7, with strong home team possession for most of the game.
In the latter half of the game, the rain began to pick up in intensity. The spectators brought out umbrellas, the JV team warming up on the sidelines retreated under cover, and still, the varsity players continued. Though Westwood continually battered the away team with shots on goal, neither team let up in relentlessness in physicality, with multiple incidents throughout the game.
With three minutes left on the clock, midfielder Carlo Fernandez ‘23 suffered an injury. The play was stopped, and after trainers helped him off the field, play resumed with a free kick near the center field for the Warriors. Soon, just as the rain began to pick up into a storm, the game drew to a close at 2-0 in favor of the Warriors.
The varsity team will take on the Dragons on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 7:30 P.M. at Round Rock.
