Students gather around after their performance. Dancers from the Love of China School of Dance performed at the 2023 showcase on Saturday, April 8. “[The recital] is just to show off the dances all the classes have been doing and learning the whole year, so it’s really fun to watch other classes,” Hannah Au ’26 said.

On Saturday, April 8, students from the Love of China School of Dance performed their 2023 showcase at Brentwood Christian School. The various classes each performed traditional Chinese dances at a recital that occurs about once every two or three years.

The school teaches students traditional Chinese dances of varying styles and incorporates colorful costumes and props, such as a silver platter, into their routines.

“[It’s] great to educate others about things that they might have never known in their life, like students and people who watch our performances [learn about] the culture of our dances,” Hannah Au ‘26 said.

Various age groups performed different styles of dances. For instance, the freshman and sophomore age group performed the iron fan dance and a dance that incorporated silver platters as a prop.

“So the iron fan dance is more of like a sharp type of dance. It’s more fierce,” Au said. “Then our silver platter dance was more graceful.”

Students worked on their dances since August in order to perform at the recent recital in front of a larger audience.

“[Saturday’s performance] is just to show off the dances all the classes have been doing and learning the whole year,” Au said. “Many people pay to watch it, and they get really impressed by how we perform. It’s a great feeling.”
