Dance Department Reaches New Heights at Annual Escapade Performance
Released on Friday, March 13, 'Slanted' shines a light on internalized racism in teenage Asian diaspora through the satirical body horror genre. The film follows Chinese American teenager Joan Huang in her journey before, during, and after receiving ethnic modification surgery in order to be more white, securing social status and her ultimate dream: prom queen. Though 'Slanted' falls flat in its plain messaging, the film ultimately unearths wounds caused by racism that America attempted to bury in the 2010s.

Gazing into the audience, Wes Autry ’26 as Mr. DePinna poses like the Discus Thrower as Mayla Montgomery ’26 as Penny Sycamore paints him. Mr. DePinna was especially absurd, requiring intense amounts of committment from Autry and resulting in an All-Star Cast honor at competiton. “I never expected anything like that,” Autry said. “[This is] the first year I’ve ever gone to UIL, and winning an award from it is gratifying. It’s something I never thought I would achieve, and so achieving that makes me feel like everything I’ve done here wasn’t pointless.”

Class of 2025 I’ve been obsessed with writing for as long as I’ve been retaining memories, and I’m unbelievably excited to get to write for the Horizon and work for the Heritage. I’m almost as—if not equally—enthusiastic about design, speculative fiction, traditional and digital art, playing guitar, volleyball, crocheting and knitting, consuming every kind of food and drink, learning languages, crosswords, having unreasonably strong opinions about everything, and Westwood Theatre, in no particular order. Some might say I do too much. They’re probably right.
