JV Orange Volleyball made a clean sweep against the Hutto Hippos, on Tuesday Sept.30. The two teams faced off on the court at 5:30 p.m. Working hard for every ball, both teams strategized and hustled but in the end the Lady Warriors came out as the dominant team winning the game 2-0.
“We had played them before, so we knew this was going to be an easy game,” Isabelle Call ‘28 said. “[To prepare] we talked about how we’re going to play, [we] decided on our free ball plays, [and] what we were going to do if we get an easy ball.”
Starting the game off, Henley Hammonds ‘28 served ball to the Hutto side, followed by a great first rally. After many back and fourth possessions, Hutto stole the first point of the night. However, coming off two points conceded by Hutto, Quinn Ewert ‘28 stepped up and scored, through a fierce spike. Ewert then gained an ace off her serve, giving Westwood a two point lead and a tie of 3-3. Quinn had three consecutive aces all that gave Westwood points, advancing past Hutto at 5-3. Westwood continued to advance as a result of great serves and spikes.
A Timeout was taken by Hutto at 7-2, coming out of the timeout Hutto snuck in a hit past Westwood defense, giving them the first point out of the timeout. However, Isabelle Call ‘28 came in with a hard blow to the Hutto backrow adding to the scoreboard 8-3. The Lady Warriors continued to trailblaze throughout the first set, maintaining lots of composure and good communication. Additionally precise and accurate serves aided the girls, as much of the points scored in the first set were a result of the following. The Warriors extended the lead to 17-11, however, due to small blunders and Hutto getting past the Westwood defense the lead was immensely shortened down to 22-18. The pressure was boiling, but the Warriors came together and continued to perform with precision and calmness. A great tip by Lila Nicosia ‘28 followed by an out ball by Hutto helped the Lady Warriors claim set one, 25-22, 1-0.
“Our first half [of the first set], I think we started off solid with good passes and good hits,” Call said. “[But] after that we started getting a little complacent with ourselves, and started hitting not as well as we should’ve. Towards the end, we locked in and started hitting good shots, but we just didn’t have the same energy near the end of the second [half of the first set].
Coming off a strong first set, the Warriors didn’t start as confident as they did in the first set. The backrow struggled to continue the flow of the game following the serves or spikes, this gave Huddo an early 3-0 lead. Soon after, Westwood got it together and began coming back. Starting with a good tip by Ewert up front giving Westwood a point and some much needed confidence. With fierce rallies, great strategy and communication, both teams were tied at 6-6.
The tie was broken with a great spike made by Nicosia.Following this spike, Hutto’s front row came back, serving Westwood a hard spike, and landing a kill right in the middle of the court bringing the two teams back to a tie game of 8-8. The two teams went back and fourth and tied for the third time in the game at 11-11. Westwood’s two consecutive aces helped them advance 13-11, causing a Hutto timeout.
Fresh off of the timeout Westwood added another point to the scoreboard as a result of a Hutto blunder 14-11. The Warriors brought the energy and passion as they weakened Hutto’s back row and made numerous blocks against Hutto’s front row.Aurora Simmons ‘28 and DeLany Selfridge ‘27 and Nicosia worked together to receive hard balls by Hutto’s front row, helping to preserve and continue Westwood’s lead. Once again, the game started coming close with Hutto climbing the score board, as they were getting balls past the Warrior’s front row.
The two teams found themselves in a similar situation much like the first set with the scoreboard at 23-21.Grace Toledo ‘28 served the ball in, and an out ball by Hutto brought the Warriors one point closer to victory. Another served by Toledo, which was returned by the Hutto backrow was repaid with a game winning spike made by Kate Hammonds. Thus, the Lady Warriors brought home the win 2-0.
“In the second set we focused a lot more [than the first set],” Lila Nicosia ‘28 said. “They had a really good middle, so we couldn’t just swing straight down, we had to focus on hitting.”
This is the Warrior’s second to last home game, they will return back home on Friday Oct. 24. Until then, the Lady Warriors will play their next game on Friday Oct. 3, against Vista Ridge.
