As the first notes drifted across the auditorium, a wave of winter spirit washed over the audience, carrying with it the triumph and progress of an entire semester. On Tuesday, Dec. 9, Westwood Orchestra performed their annual winter concert at the Raymond E. Hartfield Performing Arts Center (PAC).
The evening opened with the Beginners Orchestra, an ensemble performing at their first concert after four months of learning their instrument. Following the soothing melodies of Momentum by Robert Longfield, the Concert Orchestra opened with Falling Snow by Christopher Alan Schmitz, a piece that introduced a festive winter mood.
“It was definitely a bit shaky at the start, but as we moved on to the other pieces we improved,” Yuejia Yeong ‘26 said. “[My favorite piece we played at this concert] was the Kraken [by Kevin Sluder]. I liked how the different instruments had different melodies and they all blended together really well.”
The Philharmonic Second Block orchestra took the stage next, with Carillon by George Bizet. The striking piece featured melodic notes and quick phrases, along with enchanting solos. It was contrasted by the second piece, Ice Sculptures by Brian Balmages, which unfolded a slow, reflective atmosphere. The last orchestra performing, the Philharmonic 8th Block orchestra, showcased technique and mastery in their respective pieces.
“[The performance] was very rewarding, I felt that everyone did really great and our hard work definitely paid off,” Elly Chen ‘28 said. “The preparation process was very fast as we had a lot of pieces to learn in a very limited time, but Ms. Whatley helped us feel a lot more prepared.”
Closing the concert, the Philharmonic Eighth Block orchestra played a rendition of Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson. It was conducted by a student, Sean Chen ‘27, rather than either one of the orchestra directors, making it an especially special piece. The familiar jingle-bell motifs and bright rhythms brought a celebratory energy to the stage that ended the concert on a joyful note.
“I really liked Sleigh Ride because it was really fun to play, especially when the guest conductor came on to the stage. It was an amazing experience,” Chen said.
Westwood Orchestra will take the stage again on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at the PAC for their Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Honor Orchestra Send-Off Concert.

I really like the writing! My only note is there is no Philharmonic 8th block. The orchestra that played “Sleigh Ride” was Philharmonic 4th. Just wanted to point that out
