Facing Stony Point on Friday, Jan. 9, the varsity boys’ basketball team cruised to a dominant 79-41 victory. The Warriors controlled the game from the opening tip, building momentum throughout and never looking back.

“I say we started off rocky, but once we started to get the feel of it, started to play our game, it was a good game,” Sumner Holland ’26 said.

The Warriors won the opening tip but struggled to convert early opportunities. Stony Point drew first blood with a 2-0 lead before Luke Carpenter ’26 responded, drawing a foul and sinking both free throws to tie the game. After both teams traded possessions, Holland drained a three-pointer to spark the offense. John McNair ’26 found Holland for another three, giving Westwood an 11-8 lead. McNair added an easy layup to close the quarter with the Warriors ahead 13-9.

“The game plan was to play our game, play smart offense, and great defense,” Holland said. “That’s what we did throughout the game.”

The second quarter showcased Westwood’s suffocating defense as Stony Point’s offense faltered. Carpenter converted both free throws to push the lead to 15-11. Holland drove for a layup to extend the advantage to 19-15. Landeyn Vallery ’26 then secured a steal and passed to Kameron Hill ’29 for another open layup. Holland connected from beyond the arc before McNair drained a three-pointer to push the lead to 31-21. Following this, Hill secured a steal in the final seconds and passed to Carpenter for yet another open layup, sending Westwood into halftime with a commanding 33-23 advantage.

“We watched film, knew they were one on one players, and made sure not to let them score a lot,” Hill said.

The third quarter saw the Warriors pull away decisively. Charlie Fry ’26 opened with a layup before Holland stole the ball and nailed a three-pointer. McNair followed immediately with another three, extending the surge to 41-23. The Warriors continued dominating as Vallery and McNair added baskets while Stony Point’s offensive drought persisted. Cole Theil ’26 added a layup to end the quarter with Westwood leading 51-33.

“The halftime adjustment was keeping in front, because they kept going downhill and getting free throws,” Holland said. “Keep them in front of you and go hands straight up.”

Fry opened the fourth quarter with a layup as multiple Warriors connected from downtown. Holland answered a Stony Point basket with a contested three-pointer and drew a foul, completing the four-point play. Carpenter converted inside to make it 65-36. Dylan Joyner ’28 then grabbed his own rebound for a putback while Hill secured a steal and passed to Vallery for a quick layup. The Warriors dominated the final minutes as Jaxon Covin ’27 scored a layup. The final score of the game was 79-41.

“Team chemistry was really good today,” Holland said. “We worked a lot on it in the off-season and that work showed.”

The Warriors showcased balanced offensive execution and suffocating defense throughout the game, never allowing Stony Point to mount a serious comeback. Holland had a career night with his three-point shooting, while the team’s preparation and halftime adjustments proved decisive in securing the lopsided victory. Westwood will return to the court on Tuesday, Jan. 13, against the Vandegrift Vipers.
