Varsity Debate at Hendrickson

Debate team dominated the Hendrickson tournament this past weekend, winning first and second place in almost every event they competed in. The team has been training hard since the last month of last school year, preparing cases, practicing drills, and doing practice debates against one another to prepare for tournaments like this one.

“I love the community,” policy debater Anjali Venkatesh ’17 said. “Making arguments about how to potentially fix everything that’s wrong with the world is really fun.”

While these tournaments are full of students wanting to win, winning isn’t everything to these debaters.

“My favorite part of the tournament would most likely be hanging out with debaters between rounds,” extemporaneous debater Jackson Freeman ’17 said. “You learn a lot there.”

The Debate Team’s next tournament is Grapevine in Dallas on September 12 and 13. They will compete in public forum, extemporaneous speaking, policy debate, and Lincoln-Douglas debate. For more information, find the Debate Team on Facebook or go to their website here.

About the Contributor
Simone Heim, News Editor
Hi, my name is Simone Heim. I work for the Westwood Horizon online news as the Head News Editor. This is my third year in Student Press, as well as my fourth year in the journalism program. I also participate in the Westwood theater program as an actor and occasionally with tech. Outside of school I work as an assistant coach at a parkour gym teaching fight choreography, and over the summer I’m a counselor at a few summer camps. Some of my pastimes include obsessively listening to musical soundtracks, telling my friends to ‘fight me’, crying over television shows, and drinking hot cocoa.
