During the week of Homecoming, beginning on Oct. 6, clubs, organizations, and sports teams worked hard for the annual hallway decoration contest and the parade float competition. This year’s overarching theme was games.

At the pep rally on Oct. 8, the winner of each contest was announced: the Freshman Class of 2018 won both competitions with their chosen game, Go Fish!

“We began to form ideas before school started when [the Class of 2018 Student Council representatives] first met,” Faith Song ‘18 said.

Aided by their mentor Vicky Tarver, the students debated on using many different games for their theme before finally decided on Go Fish!

“Ms. Tarver told us last year they wanted to incorporate freshman as fish,” Srija Reddy ‘18 said. “We were originally were going to do Candyland, but we decided on Go Fish! since we’re freshman, and we’re like ‘fishies’.”

After making a final decision, students began rigorously working on costumes and decorations.

“The process involved a lot of time commitment,” Song said. “Although most of us were really busy, we managed to meet up at least once a week starting in September, which made me very proud of our teamwork.”

The students were especially driven to win after learning that freshman had not won either competition in the past eight years. Not only did the Class of 2018 break this losing streak, but they also reached the unprecedented achievement of winning both competitions.

While freshmen won first place for both float and hallway decorations, there were other winners. NFHS and French Club won second in hallway decorations for Les Milles Bornes, while Hope won third place for Angry Birds. For parade floats, Girls’ Basketball took second for Hungry, Hungry Hippos and ASL won third for The Elephant Game.

“It was really hard to believe that we won the float and even further the hall decorations,” Song said. “I was happy and proud of our members who made all of this possible.”

Hi, I’m Emily, and I’m the Executive Editor of the Westwood Student Press. I love reading and designing, and I hate avocados. I always have music playing in the background, whether I’m doing homework or taking a nap. I drink a lot of water, and consequently I invest of a lot of energy into decorating my Nalgene bottle with pretty stickers. I weed out my fake friends by making my birthday incorrect on Facebook so only the fake friends wish me a happy birthday on my fake birthday. My favorite book is The Secret History by Donna Tartt; it’s a book about friends killing friends for the sake of the Aesthetic™. So it goes.
