Demolishing the Manor Mustangs, the varsity boys’ soccer team continued their winning streak on Friday, Feb. 20, at the Warrior Bowl. The Warriors ended triumphant with a final score of 4-0.
“Coming into the game, everyone knows it’s senior night, [and] it’s at home, so everyone’s pretty happy about it,” Josh Wu ‘26 said. “We just had a really good vibe going into the game. We were feeling really good as a team, so we knew we could beat them.”
For the first 10 minutes of the match, possession of the ball was passed back and forth between the Mustangs and the Warriors, with both teams having multiple attempted shots. Benji DeBlois ‘26 had many key saves, throwing himself outside of the box in order to stop the ball.
15 minutes into the first half, Hunter Brown ‘26 had a breakaway and an attempted shot, taking the ball 60 yards down the field, and helping the Warriors gain offensive possession once more. Not long after, the first goal of the game was scored by Aaron Charcas ‘28.
“I think after the first 20 minutes we started putting out all the subs and it’s senior night so we just started having more fun with it,” Nolan Loftin ‘26 said. “It became a little less serious but honestly I think the other team just started falling apart.”
Minutes later, Loftin took a penalty kick and scored the second goal of the game, bringing the score to 2-0. After the goal, the ball resumed being passed back and forth.
“I practiced [penalty shots] almost all season,” Loftin said. “I’d never gotten an opportunity to take one [until now], so this was my first time. I’ve been practicing for it, so I just did what I practiced and it went in.”
With minutes left in the half, Ishaan Saini ‘26 took the ball and passed to Aidan Shen ‘26, helping the Warriors gain possession again. The Mustangs continued to turn up their aggression as halftime crept closer and the gap in the score did not close. The first half concluded with a final score of 2-0.
“I think we [were] playing pretty strong [all] around, but Coach Hellums always has tweaks and stuff to tell us during halftime.” Josh Wu ‘26 said. “We have a projector that we watched [and] he was pointing out that their defense comes up pretty high and gives us space to run in behind.”
The Warriors started with possession of the ball to open the second half. For the first 15 minutes, the ball went back and forth, with the Mustangs continuing their increase in aggression.
“[I think I had a really good] play with Beau [Bryant ‘26],” Loftin said. “We were good at keeping possession, I gave him the ball, he was getting highly pressed, and then he just dealt with it. After I gave him the ball, he gave it to Ishann, we got out from their press and we went up the field.”
At the 20 minute mark, Rodrigo Garcia ‘26 scored the third goal of the game, allowing the Warriors to sit comfortably with a 3-0 lead. Minutes after, Wu scored the last goal of the night for the Warriors, raising the score to 4-0.
That was my first goal of the season,” Wu said. “Being able to score is always really special, and on senior night, even more so.”
The game concluded with the Warriors taking the 4-0 win. The boys’ next game will take place on Tuesday Feb. 24, at Hutto High School at 7:30 p.m.
