Giving their all for the first game of the season, the combined JV girls lacrosse team crushed the Bowie Bulldogs and took home a quick 4-3 victory on Thursday, Feb. 12.
Jumping into the game, Westwood took the draw and immediately made their way towards the goal. Both teams fought neck-and-neck with the ball, with sharp defense preventing either side from scoring. Because of this, the first quarter ended in an uneventful 0-0 tie.
“[After the first quarter was tied 0-0], I felt a bit of anticipation,” Ayman Halai ‘27 said. “There were a lot of close goals that didn’t make it, but as a team we always reset mentally each quarter, so I knew we’d play stronger.”
Following the previous slow quarter, Bowie kicked things off by immediately scoring the first goal. Continuous scrambles for ground balls ignited the competition, fueling the Lady Warriors’ determination to score. Westwood was able to tie the game with a turning point goal to break through Bowie’s defense. Despite Westwood’s solid communication and offense, the Bulldogs were able to score another goal and close the second quarter 2-1.
“We could have improved on slowing it down and not rushing at all, because we made some passes and shots that we shouldn’t have,” Bonnie Rose Hance ‘29 said.
The Lady Warriors refused to let Bowie steal the momentum, with Hance scoring a second goal straight into the third quarter. Sturdy Westwood defense kept the Bulldogs subdued and solidified the third quarter with a 2-2 tie.
“I felt confident in our team [going into the game] because I knew that we had worked hard throughout this season,” Hance said. “We were going to come together and strive through adversity.”
Launching the fourth quarter, another goal from the Warriors widened the score gap, leaving Bowie in the dust. Gabriela Antillon-Galvan ‘28 was able to steal the ball from the Bulldogs, passing the ball to Hance, who made her second goal of the night. Bowie responded with a goal of their own, but even with high tensions, the Lady Warriors kept their heads in the game and blocked the Bulldogs from scoring again. The team’s determination to stay focused paved the way to their victory, crushing Bowie 4-3.
“[This game] was a great learning experience for all the new players,” Galvan said. “Our team worked really hard and definitely put in their best effort. I feel like I did best on moving the ball downfield.”
The Lady Warriors return to the Warrior Bowl against the St. Stephens Spartans on March 25.
