The JV white soccer team fell to the Vista Ridge Rangers on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the WarriorBowl. The Warriors suffered their first loss of the season with a final score of 4-0.
“[Vista Ridge] came on very physical,” Bobby Deng ’29 said. “They scored bangers.”
The game began when Vista Ridge immediately took control of the ball and maintained possession for the majority of the match. The Rangers played agressive, putting constant pressure on the Warrior’s defense and limiting Westwood’s opportunities to push forward.
Vista Ridge’s physical style of play proved difficult for the Warriors to counter. The Rangers were effective at clearing the ball and intercepting passes, particularly when the Westwood goalkeeper attempted to push the ball forward to start offensive plays.
By halftime, Vista Ridge had already established a commanding 0-2 lead over the Warriors. The early deficit weighed heavily on Westwood’s performance.
“I think the first half going 0-2 was pretty heavy, so we passed less than we should’ve,” Bhargav Kancherlapalli ‘29 said.
In the second half, Vista Ridge received a yellow card, giving the Warriors an opportunity to push up and capitalize on the penalty. However, Westwood was unable to convert as the ball went in too deep, and the Rangers quickly regained control.
Despite the setback, the Warriors attempted to change their approach in the second half.
“We tried to be more assertive in the second half but it didn’t really work out,” Matteo Stein ’29 said. “We look forward to improving this in the future.”
Vista Ridge added two more goals to the board in the second half, solidifying their 4-0 victory over Westwood. The Warriors struggled to maintain possession and create scoring opportunities against the Rangers’ aggressive defensive play.
Looking ahead, the Warriors identified key areas for improvement following their first loss.
“For the team I think we just need to pass more, but for myself I just think I need better positioning really,” Deng said.
The Warriors will look to bounce back against the McNeil Mavericks on Friday, Feb. 13, at the Warrior Bowl at 4:30 p.m.
