JV orange soccer boys played against the McNeil Mavericks on Friday, Feb. 13, at the Warrior Bowl. After being down a point, the Warriors made a comeback tying the game 1-1.
“Our team [persevered] through everything, all the obstacles,” Carl Gundersen ’27 said. “We got tired [from it], so I’m proud of that.”
To open the game, both the Warriors and Mavericks made multiple efforts to attack their opposing goal. However, while the game started off fiery, momentum was soon slowed as both teams struggled to get the ball into the back of the net.
While the Warriors were unsuccessful in scoring any early goals, they held the pace of the game and continued to dominate the possession game. While the Warriors continued to attempt to break down the Maverick’s defense, the solid stalemate continued as the Mavericks held strong.
“[Our game plan] was trying to control the game, possession. That’s our style and our culture at the soccer program,” Colin Lanier ’27 said. “In the first half, we controlled the game pretty well, and [the Mavericks] fought back pretty good.”
In the second half, the Mavericks played with a strategy that helped them gain possession of the ball and push forward. One of these pushes through the Warrior defense claimed to be successful, allowing them to score the first goal of the game, bringing the score to 1-0 within the first ten minutes of the second half.
After this goal, the Warriors launched different offenses, pushing the Maverick defenses. Even though the Warriors were down a goal, they continued to play aggressively putting a lot of pressure on the Maverick’s defense.
“There’s a flu going around so a lot of people are sick,” Gundersen said. “We were tired and were needing a goal.”
Although the Mavericks were able to fend off many of the Warrior attacks, the Warriors broke through, allowing Campbell Cox ‘28 to score their first goal of the night, tying the game 1-1. With no more successful goals from either team, the final score was 1-1.
“Anthony headed it back in towards the goal, and I finished it,” Cox said. “[Scoring the goal] feels good. Equalizing was good for us.”
The Warriors will play the Manor Mustangs next on Friday, Feb. 20, at the Warrior Bowl.
