Classic Halloween songs spilled out of the cafeteria, underscoring the laughter and conversations of International Baccalaureate (IB) students celebrating at the Spooky Social. Held in the cafeteria on Wednesday, Oct. 29, the social gave IB students the opportunity to come together and celebrate Halloween with food and activities.
The IB Student Organization (IBSO) was in charge of planning activities, buying decorations, and coordinating with IB Coordinator Ms. Christin Key to buy food for the event.
“We try our best to make it streamlined, not only for Ms. Key, but also for us,” Event Coordinator Nikita Reddy ‘26 said. “We’ll try to make lists of the materials we need to buy, and oftentimes we have a weekly meeting, so we’ll just note down things that we think are good ideas and then we’ll see what we can buy.”
IB students then had the opportunity to participate in autumnal activities including donut bobbing, painting pumpkins, and making bracelets.
“We’ll just think of something on the spot and then we’ll try our best to execute it,” Reddy said. “We know IB students really love working with their hands and stuff like that, so a lot of crafts is what comes to mind first.”
In a hectic season filled with college applications for seniors, and adjusting to the IB courseload for juniors, the Spooky Social gave students the chance to unwind and spend time with their friends outside of an academic setting.
“I think spending time with your friends is such an important part, and especially in IB, you don’t really get that time really anywhere else,” Alex Correia ‘26 said. “I think breathers are so important and we kind of forget to do that in the IB community, so it’s really important to have those moments really blocked out for us.”
As IB continues to emphasize the importance of community in an academically rigorous environment, students continue to find a sense of belonging and build camaraderie.
“It can be really rewarding to come and join with close friends and have that ability to celebrate things that are dear to a lot of people,” Prishaa Vishwakarma ‘27 said. “ I think that it’s a really great opportunity to make new friends, and IB is all about that close community and I think that’s really important to have.”
